Michigan’s Higher Education Student Loan Authority announced in February 2008 that it was suspending its alternative loan program, citing the agency’s expected difficulties in borrowing the money needed to finance future private loans because of the “credit crunch” affecting the U.S. capital markets. Officials of the Michigan agency said that the Michigan Alternative Student Loan Program, known as MI-Loan, provided about $68 million in private loans to 8,500 students at Michigan public, private and for-profit colleges in 2007. Agency officials said they had not seen any impact thus far of the credit crunch on the Michigan authority’s federal guaranteed loan program. Michigan Newswire, February 13, 2008.

Alger Association Scholarships (Horatio)
http://www.horatioalger.org/scholarships/
The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans has a long-standing history of helping young people from across the nation triumph over adversity. Through educational programs and services, the Association works with secondary school students who have experienced some of our society's harshest realities. For the most part, nurturing and forgiving environments are strangers to these students; they are much more familiar with the uglier side of life--crime, substance abuse, poverty, homelessness, disabling medical problems. These are the students from the inner cities, the broken homes, the students often with little or no parental role models, and even less financial support. These are students who would not be able to attend college without the support of the Horatio Alger Association. In addition to a National Scholarship Program, the Association also offers state programs in California, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, and Virginia. Restricted to high school seniors.

"All students, regardless of financial need, are eligible for some type of financial assistance. The assistance may be in the form of a loan or multiple loans that must be repaid, but a quality education is the wisest investment you will ever make. An often quoted statistic in the higher education community is that a college degree equates to nearly $1 million more in lifetime earning potential than someone with a high school diploma! That’s significant and worth the cost. The single most important thing a new college student or parent of a new college student can do to prepare financially is to make a budget. Making a budget requires knowing two things: 1) how much is college going to cost? and 2) how much money do I have to cover these costs? Our section titled How Much is this Going to Cost? can help you answer the first question. Every school will cost something different. Our Cost of Attendance worksheet will help you start putting some real costs together and start you on your way to a sound financial plan."

Get Recruited by Colleges and Universities
http://www.get-recruited.com/
Every year, hundreds of thousands of students are looking for, and hoping to gain admission to, the "right" colleges, universities, graduate schools, and professional schools. Similarly, thousands of colleges, universities, graduate schools, and professional schools are looking for the "right" students. And, while many students are seeking scholarships and financial aid, colleges, universities, and graduate schools want to allocate their scholarships, grants, teaching assistantships and other financial aid resources fairly and wisely. The aim of the Get-Recruited program is simple ... to help make this process work for both students and institutions of higher education ... to bring students together with colleges, universities, graduate schools, and professional schools and help them identify the scholarships and financial
aid for which they may qualify.

Eligibility: All graduating seniors from all high schools - public, private or alternative - within the State Journal circulation area. That stretches roughly from Alma to Leslie and from Lake Odessa to Howell.
Nominations: Accepted from all adults, including parents, grandparents, teachers, counselors, employers, neighbors - even big brothers and sisters.
Procedure: Write a letter describing, in detail, what your favorite senior has done to make the world a better place. Include your name and phone number, as well as the nominee's name, school and phone number. Mail it to:
Good Kids Scholarships, Box 001, Lansing State Journal, 120 E. Lenawee St., Lansing, MI 48919, No faxes or e-mails. Only letters sent the old-fashioned way or delivered in person to the State Journal lobby during business hours will be considered.

The only standard: A belief, demonstrated through action, that every individual has the power to make the world a better place. Four scholarships were awarded last year from 60 nominations. The sponsors include Rick Galardi of DeWitt Township and some local businesses.
