Alger Fellowship for the Study of American Popular Culture (Horatio)

The University Libraries, Northern Illinois University, invite applications for the Horatio Alger Fellowship for the Study of American Popular Culture. Funding is available to scholars who will be using materials from the Libraries’ major holdings in American popular culture. These holdings include the Albert Johannsen Collection of more than 50,000 dime novels, and the nation’s preeminent collections related to Horatio Alger, Jr., and Edward Stratemeyer. Many other authors are represented. Topics which could draw on the collections’ strengths might include the plight of urban children, image of the American West in popular literature, widespread use of pseudonyms, and stereotypical portrayals. Preference will be given to applicants who signify an interest in conducting research related to Horatio Alger, Jr. The Fellowship award consists of a $2000 stipend, and may be used between July 1 and December 31.

The Arch and Bruce Brown Foundation awards yearly grants to writers in three rotating disciplines: Theatre, Full-length Fiction, and Short Stories. All works submitted must present the gay and lesbian lifestyle in a positive manner and be based on, or inspired by, a historic person, culture, event, or work of art. Writing contests close on November 30th of each year. Grants are $1000 and are not limited to a single winner. The Foundation also offers grants (usually of $1000) to production companies to offset expenses in producing gay-positive theatrical works based on history.

Mellon Fellowships in the Humanistic Studies (Andrew W.) (Nomination Required)

  • Purpose: To attract exceptionally promising students to prepare for careers of teaching and scholarship in humanistic studies by providing top-level, competitive, portable awards, and to contribute thereby to the continuity of teaching and research of the highest order in America's colleges and universities. Eighty entry-level, one-year, portable merit Fellowships will be awarded. Fellowships are for one year only.
  • Eligibility: Any college senior or graduate of the last five years who has not yet begun graduate study, is a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, and is applying to a program leading to the Ph.D. in a humanistic field of study is encouraged to compete. Students who have begun or earned their Masters degree are not eligible. Fellows may attend any accredited graduate school in the U.S. or Canada to which they are admitted.
    The Mellon Foundation suspended the Humanistic Studies Fellowship program at the conclusion of the 2005-06 academic year in order to explore new directions in funding for higher education.

    The National Humanities Center offers 35-40 residential fellowships for advanced study in all fields of the humanities. The Library is a center for research in horse and field sports located just 42 miles west of Washington, D.C.     The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars announces the opening of its 2006-2007 fellowship competition. The Center offers residential fellowships for the entire U.S. academic year (September through May), or for a minimum of four months during the academic year, to individuals in the social sciences and humanities who submit outstanding project proposals on a broad range of national and/or international issues. Fellows are selected through a multi-level peer review process. Proposed topics should relate to key public policy challenges or provide the historical and/or cultural framework to illumine policy issues of contemporary importance. Fellows are provided with a stipend (includes a round-trip transportation allowance), part-time research assistance, and, through the assistance of professional librarians, access to the Library of Congress. Fellows work from private offices at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, DC. Eligibility: For academic applicants, eligibility is limited to the postdoctoral level and, normally, to applicants with publications beyond the Ph.D. dissertation. For other applicants, an equivalent level of professional achievement is expected. Applications from any country are welcome. All applicants should have a very good command of spoken English.     If you have access to the world wide web and are willing to fill in the online forms, this service promises a free customized list of financial aid sources. FastWeb is actually a searchable database of more than 400,000 private sector scholarships, fellowships, grants, and loans from more than 3,000 sources for all levels of higher education. First-time visitors have to register (first and last name and a user ID), then complete a profile, including background and fields of study. Registrants then receive a list of all currently relevant funding sources. The registration information is stored and can be used on subsequent visits. The entire sign-up process, and delivery of available funding sources, can be a bit tedious: about five to twenty minutes, depending on the connection speed. Approximately 500 new scholarships are added to the database daily, so registrants can stay current.
