American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture
http://www.agfoundation.org/foundation/
Over the past 30+ years, the foundation has supported a wide range of research. In its early years, projects dealt with farm safety, public lands, asparagus marketing, and control of Africanized bees and fire ants. Later, major projects included effects of the North American Free Trade Agreement on American agriculture, reduction of elimination of crop protection tools for minor crops, development of a self-help checklist for water quality, rural health issues, and rural disaster relief. More recent projects have dealt with risk management, best management practices, agricultural marketing, nutrient managment, agricultural watersheds, remote sensing technology, and manure management. In 1998, the foundation expanded its scope to include agricultural education. This will include both classroom and consumer education programs about agriculture. As the public becomes further and further removed from the production of food and fiber, it becomes more important that educational programs and materials are available to create an understanding of the industry.

American Farmland Trust
Steward of the Land Award
http://www.farmland.org/programs/award/default.asp
Deadline: Dec. 1
Throughout America there are farmers for whom protecting agricultural land is more than a worthwhile goal — it's a lifelong commitment. These farmers not only lead by example on their own farms, but they actively work to promote land stewardship at the community and state levels. To recognize these individuals, American Farmland Trust established the $10,000 Steward of the Land Award. Now in its eighth year, the award recognizes the American farmer or farm family who best demonstrates leadership in protecting farmland and caring for the environment. The award honors the memory of Peggy McGrath Rockefeller, an avid farmer and conservationist who helped found AFT. Nominees are judged on their efforts to promote farmland protection and to practice land stewardship on their farms. Winners receive a $10,000 cash stipend and a special memento inscribed with the recipient's name.

Organic Farming Research Foundation
http://ofrf.org/grants/apply.html
OFRF funds research into organic farming and food systems and dissemination of research results to organic farmers and to growers interested in making the transition to organic production systems. Projects should involve farmers in both design and execution and take place on working organic farms whenever possible and appropriate. OFRF may support innovative educational grants that reach or benefit a significant number of organic farmers and ranchers.
We encourage modest proposals. The average grant awarded in the past two cycles was around $8,000. OFRF will not fund a project for more than $15,000 per year. Matching funds from other sources and/or in-kind contributions from cooperators are encouraged but not required. OFRF will only fund one year of a multi-year project at a time. An interim report and new application are required for the Board to consider funding each subsequent year.
OFRF is particularly interested in supporting research that is not only relevant to, but takes place in, certified organic systems. OFRF does not normally fund studies that have, as a primary objective, comparisons of conventional with organic systems.

Perennial Plant Association
http://www.perennialplant.org/education/research.htm
Grant funds are available from the Perennial Plant Association (PPA) to be used for research. Although our basic criterion for research proposals are in direct relationship to the herbaceous perennial industry, preference will be given to quality proposals for research on slow release fertilizers, height reduction by growth regulators, techniques to increase bud (eye) production, propagation techniques, and invasive species. Guidelines for the format of the proposal are included.
The grants are available to any recognized non-profit entity in the United States or Canada. No overhead will be paid to the institution on these grants. Although the researcher may wish to publish the results in a refereed journal first, the grant recipient is expected to make a written report of the findings to the PPA. The written report will be published, all or in part, in Perennial Plants, the PPA journal. When results are published elsewhere, mention must be made of support by the Perennial Plant Association.
